For the home gardener:

Plant heat-tolerant lettuces such as Great Lakes, Commander, and the looser-leafed Cos Green lettuce. Plant a new batch of beans every month and harvest them two to three times per week.

Splash bait on the leaves of cucumbers, marrows, melons, squashes, and pumpkins to control pumpkin fly.

Harvest baby potatoes once the plants have flowered.

Sow seed right now. Beets, beans, and radishes grow well in summer rainfall areas. Sweet peppers and eggplants grow well in the subtropics. Seedlings of sweet peppers, chilies, aubergines, and tomatoes; the last batch of beans in winter rainfall areas. Seeds of beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beans, leeks, and Swiss chard can be grown in frosty areas.

Which crops are the best in December?

Salad leaves such as mustard greens, mizuna, corn salad, lambs lettuce, and ‘Winter Gem’ lettuce can be grown outside in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse in December. Grow them in the ground if you live in a mild climate, and use cloches to protect them if temperatures drop dramatically.

Is it possible to plant something in December?

Planting flowers like snapdragons and pansies, vegetables like lettuce, carrots, and cabbage, and herbs like rosemary and oregano are all good ideas for December. Garlic bulbs can also be grown in pots. However, because the ground is so hard, now is not the time to plant fruit trees or shrubs.
