What is An Investment Company?

An investment company is a corporation, trust or business engaged in the business of investing the pooled capital of investors in financial securities. Investment companies are businesses that manage, sell, and market mutual funds to the public, and are categorized into three types: closed-end funds, mutual funds (or open-end funds), and unit investment trusts. Each of these three investment companies must be registered with and regulated by the Financial Services Board.

There are many different types of investments, but they can generally be grouped into four main categories:

  1. Cash and cash equivalents: These include savings accounts, money market funds, and short-term government bonds. They are considered the safest investments and are generally used as a short-term holding place for cash that will be used in the near future.
  2. Bonds: Bonds are debt securities issued by companies or governments. They pay a fixed rate of interest to investors and can be considered a less risky investment than stocks.
  3. Stocks: Stocks, also known as equities, represent ownership in a public company. They are considered riskier than bonds but have the potential for higher returns.
  4. Real estate: Real estate can include residential or commercial properties, and can be held through direct ownership or through real estate investment trusts (REITs). Real estate investments can provide income through rental income and potential appreciation in the value of the property.
