Launched on Thursday, 28 January 2016, the ‘I care UKZN’ campaign is a significant student-led initiative at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). This campaign focuses on providing financial support to academically excellent students who lack the necessary funding to continue their education. Here are the key aspects of this campaign:

Goals and Objectives

Student-Led Initiative: Spearheaded by UKZN Student Leadership (SRC) for their fellow students.

Fundraising Aim: To raise funds to assist unfunded, academically excelling students.

Inclusive Education: Ensures that financial constraints do not hinder capable students from pursuing their studies.

Campaign Strategies

Collaborative Efforts: The campaign involves the SRC, Student Services Division, and the UKZN Foundation.

Previous Success: In February 2015, a similar initiative raised R65,000 in two weeks, assisting 6 financially needy students.

    • Focus on students with family income below R150,000 per annum.
    • Prioritization based on academic performance.
    • Assistance for students owing fees from 2013 to 2015.
    • Requirement to complete a special financial aid application for i-Care Funding.
    • Allocation of funds set per student until depleted.

Support and Contributions

Appeal to Stakeholders: The campaign reaches out to staff, students, corporates, and individuals for contributions.

University Management Support: Backed by UKZN’s management, ensuring credibility and wider reach.

Significance

Addressing Education Inequality: Aims to bridge the gap created by financial disparities and the limitations of existing funding models like NSFAS.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Encourages a culture of communal support and responsibility towards education.

The ‘I care UKZN’ campaign is a testament to the proactive and community-oriented spirit of UKZN, aiming to ensure that financial barriers do not impede the academic progress of deserving students.
