UKZN Mellon Spatial Humanities Scholarship

ABOUT THE COMPANY – UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was established in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal and Durban-Westville. The university has five main campuses: Edgewood, Howard College, Medical School, Pietermaritzburg, and Westville. Each campus is home to different colleges specializing in various trades and disciplines.

ABOUT THE UKZN MELLON SPATIAL HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP – FIELDS COVERED

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is offering the Andrew Mellon Masters and Doctoral Scholarship Project in Spatial Humanities. This scholarship is open to Masters and Doctoral students at UKZN interested in working in the field of Spatial Humanities within an African context. Spatial Humanities involves using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial technologies, and methods within the Humanities to explore the relationship between space, the built environment, human behavior, history, culture, and identity.

The project aims to bring together students and scholars from both humanistic and geoscience disciplines to engage in interdisciplinary research. The focus areas for the project include architectural vernaculars and space/place making, community-integrated GIS and Spatial Humanities, cultural and digital mapping, GIS, memory and cultural mapping, language, beliefs, and place making, and African Spatial Humanities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UKZN MELLON SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • New or first-year Masters or PhD students
  • Registered as full-time students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • Willingness to be located at the Howard College Campus
  • Willingness to work collaboratively within the project and under the supervision of project supervisors
  • Prepared to be assigned specific focused signature study topics
  • Prepared to engage in fieldwork linked to one of the three sites: uMlazi, Chatsworth, Durban Central
  • Not employed full-time
  • Encouraged applicants include local Black South African students, female students, and students who have completed Honours or Masters qualifications in related disciplines within Humanities and GIS

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE UKZN MELLON SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Certificates of all degrees completed (certified copy)
  • Full academic record: undergraduate and postgraduate
  • Motivational letter explaining why the applicant is a suitable candidate to work in Spatial Humanities (2 pages)
  • Concept note with bibliography on one of the research areas mentioned (2 pages)
  • Portfolio (optional): publications, opinion pieces, artwork, photography, film, theater

All documents must be combined into a single PDF document and emailed to Udo Fidelis at udofidelisj@gmail.com. The subject line of the email should be “UKZN Mellon Scholarship Application .” There is no specific application form for this scholarship; applicants must submit the required documents listed above.

CLOSING DATE FOR THE UKZN MELLON SCHOLARSHIP

The closing date for the scholarship application is 15 April. Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted.
