JB Marks Education Trust Fund
The JB Marks Education Trust Fund was established in 1997 by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in honor of John Beaver, a prominent political activist and trade unionist. The trust’s objective is to empower NUM members and their dependents by providing educational assistance, particularly to those pursuing careers in the mining, energy, and construction industries.
Bursary Details:
- The JB Marks Education Trust Fund offers bursaries to 200 qualified undergraduate and 50 postgraduate students annually.
- The bursaries are available to paid-up NUM members or former members (retired, retrenched, disabled, or deceased), as well as their dependents and family members.
- The trust fund covers tertiary and higher education expenses, including registration, tuition and examination fees, textbooks, extra lessons, meals, accommodation, exchange programs, and capacity-building program expenses.
Support for Bursary Holders:
- The Professional Development Office provides support to bursary holders, including extra tuition, additional expenses not covered by tuition fees, academic mentoring, course/university changes, exit workshops, and an awards ceremony for graduating beneficiaries.
Bursary Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Current or former (retired, disabled, retrenched, deceased) member or official of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), including their dependents.
- Immediate family of a NUM member or official.
- Studying at tertiary level toward a degree, diploma, or postgraduate qualification. Postgraduate applicants must be in their last year of undergraduate study, and only critical study areas will be considered.
- High school students in Grade 10 to Matric.
- Applicants should not have any other sources of funding.

- Undergraduate Students: Apply online at JB Marks Education Trust Fund Bursary Application 2024-2025 (Undergraduate) before the closing date.
- Postgraduate Students: Applications are currently closed (reopen in August 2024-2025).
Application Documents:
Submit the following documents with the application form:
- Union member/official’s payslip
- Certified copy of the applicant’s most recent academic records
- Certified ID copies of the applicant and the union member
- Acceptance Letter/Application verification letter from the university
- Motivation Letter for postgraduate applicants, along with additional documents.
Closing Date:
- Undergraduate Students: 1 July 2024-2025.
- Postgraduate Students: Applications are CLOSED (reopen in August 2024-2025).
