The Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) degree at the University of Pretoria is a comprehensive and modern program designed to train future veterinarians. It reflects an internationally recognized and recommended approach to veterinary education. Here’s an overview of the program structure, admission requirements, and selection criteria:
Program Overview:
Introduction of Program: The new core-elective BVSc program was introduced in 2011.
Accreditation: The degree is internationally recognized and allows graduates to register and work as veterinarians in South Africa.
Campus Locations:
- First year: Hatfield Campus.
- Second year onwards: Onderstepoort Campus.
Curriculum Structure:
First Year: Shares modules with BSc (Agric)(Animal Science) / Biological Science/Zoology programs, including Medical Terminology. The Veterinary Professional Life module is not a prerequisite for admission to the second year.
Second Year: Focuses on basic veterinary disciplines like Anatomy, Histology, Microbiology, Physiology, Animal Science, Pasture Science, and Professional Life.
Third Year: Covers disease causes and effects, including Infectious Diseases, Parasitology, Toxicology, Pharmacology, Organ Pathology, and Professional Life.
Fourth Year: Introduction to diagnostics and therapeutics.
Fifth Year: Community interaction, species-directed modules, and didactic components of elective modules.
Experiential Training: Approximately 12 months in the academic hospital, satellite, and other approved facilities.
Admission Requirements:
Selection Process: Admission is by selection due to limited places.
Application Deadline: 31 July.
Minimum Entry Requirement: National Senior Certificate (NSC) with specified achievement levels in English, Mathematics, and Physical Science.
Admission Point Score (APS): Minimum APS of 35 for the 2022 intake. Selection is based on Grade 11 results (provisionally) and confirmed by Grade 12 results.
Additional Requirement: A minimum achievement level of 4 in Life Orientation (not counted in APS calculation).
Selection Criteria:
Categories for New Students: School leavers, students with prior tertiary exposure, international students, students nominated by other bodies, repeating students.
Basis of Selection: Academic merit (NSC and Value-added questionnaire).
Foreign Students: Limited admissions, subject to academic credits, course content equivalency, and valid study permit.
Additional Fees for Foreign Students: Subject to levies and differential study fees.

Eligible Applicants for Admission:
- Final year school students applying with their Grade 11 (or equivalent) final results.
- Applicants who have completed high school but have not started further studies.
- Holders of certificates equivalent to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) with university endorsement, certified by Universities South Africa (USAf).
- Current tertiary education students.
- Graduates from other tertiary institutions or those with graduate status from such institutions.
- Graduates from other faculties at the University of Pretoria.
Selection Process:
- Selection is merit-based within different categories.
- Applicants are categorized and ranked, with selections made until capacity is reached in each category.
- The Faculty aims to select students from diverse backgrounds and ethnic representations, with designated ethnic groups including Black Africans, Coloureds, and Indians as per the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998.
- The Admissions Committee may reallocate spaces from one category to another based on the number of qualifying applicants.
- The final number of places is determined by the Admissions Committee, considering available teaching facilities and resources.

Conditional Admission:
- School-leaving and university applicants conditionally admitted must meet the set conditions in Annexure G to retain their placement.
- Failure to meet these conditions will result in forfeiture of their placement.
- South African school-leaving applicants enrolled for the NSC or IEB, who forfeit their placement but still meet minimum requirements, will be considered in the second round of selection in January.
