African Academy Distance Learning Courses

Distance Learning is offered by the African Academy in the following courses: Higher Certificate in Piping Draughting, National Diploma in Structural Steelwork Detailing and Multi Disciplinary Drawing Office Practice N4 / N5.  These courses are now available  to students outside the Gauteng Region who may find it difficult to attend classes.

Distance Learning components are designed in Piping Draughting and Structural Steel Detailing for the student who is currently in the field but would like to up skill their qualifications to a higher level.  The student would fill in an application form from the website and e-mail or fax this to the African Academy for registration purposes.  After the registration fees are paid, the student will receive a password to be able to access the Distance Learning site for learning material.  All material will be available in a PDF format and is downloadable.  Assignment dates with tutorial letters will be mailed to the student and all assignments will either be posted or mailed for the purpose of building up a year mark.  Support to the student will be in the form of an e-mail to the relevant lecturer or at planned workshops. All examinations and summative assessments will have to be done at the African Academy premises till further venues are registered.  For Structural Steel Detailing, this will take place twice a year and for Piping Draughting, once a year.

The Multi Disciplinary Drawing Office Practice N4 / N5  will be offered to students not yet in the workplace or exiting from school. This qualification is aimed at the junior level of draughting and will only be on offer to students who have Grade 11 Mathematics, Physical Science and Engineering and Graphic Design at 50% from a Technical High School or a student with a Matric Certificate at the same pass rate of 50% in the mentioned subjects.  Due to the difficult factor around Engineering Draughting it is recommended that the student have a sound knowledge of the basics in draughting.

The application requirements are the same as in the other courses and can be found on the website.  The procedures around the Distance Learning is the same as in the above qualification with the Examination Centre for the National Examinations at the African Academy unless other arrangements can be made with other FET Colleges in other provinces, if they have the right equipment available.
