South Africa’s standard accreditation body is SANAS. Founded in 1996, SANAS has headquarters in Pretoria.
The SA Accreditation Council (Sanas) has been tasked with accrediting organisations that provide services to the public. It is a formal recognition by the Government of South Africa that something is competent or legal.
SANAS provides recognition to laboratories that test and calibrate according to ISO/IEC 17025 or medical laboratories that test and calibrate in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 or ISO 15189.

About SANAS
SANAS, an acronym for the South African National Archives National Security and Intelligence Services, is on the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition Campus in Pretoria. It is directed by a board of directors appointed by Minister of Trade and Industry.
The Board delegates the responsibility of ensuring that SANAS’s strategic goals and mission are fulfilled to the CEO. The CEO’s final decision on who to fund is made by the Approval Committees.
SANAS helps coordinate the activities of SADC and is its secretariat. It can currently be found in Swaziland, helping the new Southern African Development Community (SADC) accede to the UN with accreditation status.
Training assessors and partnering with them to meet their needs is one-way Accreditation Services (SADCAS) has provided efficient services. SANAS was also recently elected in a bid to serve as the Secretariat for the newly established African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC).
