Introduction to BHP
BHP, formerly known as BHP Billiton, is one of the world’s leading resources companies, notably in the production of major commodities such as copper, metallurgical coal, and iron ore. The company, which has its roots in the extraction and processing of oil, minerals, and gas for global distribution, boasts over 60,000 employees and contractors. Originally headquartered in Perth, Australia, BHP emerged from the 2001 merger of Anglo–Dutch Billiton plc and the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP). In 2017, the company streamlined its operations, with BHP Billiton rebranding to BHP and Billiton becoming South32. BHP Bursary Programme
BHP offers a bursary programme for students pursuing studies in the Engineering sector. The bursary, administered by Career Wise, supports various fields of study:
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Extractive Metallurgy Engineering
- Geology
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mine Surveying
- Mining Engineering
The bursary covers registration costs, tuition, prescribed books, exam fees, accommodation, meals at the university residence, and a personal allowance.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the BHP bursary, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Be currently in Matric or have completed Matric.
- For Engineering, Science, and Geology degrees: Achieve a minimum of level 6 in Mathematics and Science.
- For Accounting degrees: Achieve a minimum of level 6 in Mathematics.
- Be accepted to study at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
Application Process

- Alternatively, applications can be submitted online at Career Wise’s website.
Required Documentation
Applicants must submit:
- A certified copy of their ID document.
- A passport-size photograph.
- Grade
11 final results if currently in Matric, or a certified copy of the Matric certificate if Matric has been completed.
- Latest academic results for current tertiary students.
- Proof of enrollment or acceptance at a tertiary institution.
