South Africa’s contributory and non-contributory social security mechanisms aim to alleviate poverty or provide temporary income support. The non-contributory components make up the greater part of the social security system. These social assistance transfers are funded from general revenue and are appropriated on the vote of the Department of Social Development.

Presently, the Sassa payment is R2010. However, the Grant-In-Aid will increase to R500 on 1 April 2023, (an increase of R20), while it is expected to  then increase to R510 on 1 October 2023 (an increase of R10).
