Can I Get My Social Security Number in South Africa?
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a national public entity established in terms of the Social Security Agency Act (2004) to administer and pay social assistance grants.
What is the importance of Social Security number in South Africa?
South Africa’s contributory and non-contributory social security mechanisms aim to alleviate poverty or provide temporary income support. The non-contributory components make up the greater part of the social security system. These social assistance transfers are funded from general revenue and are appropriated on the vote of the Department of Social Development.
How much is SASSA payment now?
Presently, the Sassa payment is R2010. However, the Grant-In-Aid will increase to R500 on 1 April 2023, (an increase of R20), while it is expected to then increase to R510 on 1 October 2023 (an increase of R10).
The SASSA Social grants are in place to help improve the living standards in society of people who are vulnerable to poverty, and need state support which includes older people, people with disabilities, and people with young children.
The grants are:
- Older person’s grant (old age pension)
