A person has to have a license to carry any firearm or weapon in public. The law also specifies that it must be done with “good reason” and that any person who does not have a license for the weapon will be guilty of an offence.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) can issue licenses for carrying firearms and weapons in public if it is considered that the person has a good reason for doing so.

The applicant must have applied for an amendment to their licence within the past 2 years of the application and all conditions of the amended licence must be met.
