Canon Collins Trust has been offering scholarships since 1981 to students from southern African countries. They have supported over 4,000 scholars from 14 countries, providing undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland, and Malawi. Their goal is to empower individuals through education and support students in various fields of study.

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a prominent South African journalist, translator, writer, intellectual, linguist, and politician. He played a significant role in the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which later became the African National Congress (ANC). Institutions such as the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, Sol Plaatje University, Sol Plaatje Museum and Library, and Sol Plaatje Educational Trust have been established in his honor.

Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship Program:

Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project, is offering scholarships for the 2023 academic year to exceptional students pursuing postgraduate studies (Masters and PhD) in specific areas:

  • Education: Policy and Practice
  • Humanities (including Arts, Anthropology, History, and Literature)
  • Justice (including Economics, Climate Justice, Law, and Politics)

Priority will be given to studies related to Climate Justice in science or applied science fields, with the application demonstrating relevance to climate justice matters.

Coverage, Benefits, and Selection:

The scholarship value ranges from R20,000 to R100,000, depending on the student’s circumstances. Masters students will receive funding for up to 2 years, and PhD students will receive funding for up to 3 years, renewable based on academic performance. Scholarship recipients will be required to participate in annual conferences and other events throughout the year.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for the Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • South African, Namibian, or Zimbabwean citizen or have refugee status in one of these countries
  • Reside in South Africa, Namibia, or Zimbabwe
  • Completed an undergraduate first degree qualification (second class, upper division or equivalent), or will graduate in
  • Intend to study towards a Masters or PhD in one of the specified areas
  • Studying or intending to study full-time, part-time, or via distance learning at a university in South Africa
