About Canon Collins Sol Plaatje:
The Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Sol Plaatje educational program, offers scholarships to deserving students. The Canon Collins Trust has been providing scholarships to South African students since 1981, covering undergraduate and postgraduate studies in South Africa, the UK, Ireland, and Malawi.
Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a prominent figure in South Africa, known as a journalist, translator, intellectual, linguist, politician, and writer. He founded the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) and served as its first General Secretary. Various institutions, including the Sol Plaatje local municipality, Sol Plaatje University, Sol Plaatje Museum, and library, are named in his honor.
Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship 2025-2026:
The Canon Collins Trust, in collaboration with the Sol Plaatje educational program, aims to support and encourage deserving students interested in social justice in Southern Africa. This scholarship is for postgraduate (Masters and Ph.D.) degrees in the following areas:
- Humanities: Including literature, anthropology, history, and arts.
- Education policy and practice.
- Justice: Encompassing law, economics, politics, and the environment. Priority is given to the field of climate justice, which can be applied in science or applied science.
Additional Information:
- The scholarship amount varies from R20,000 to R100,000, depending on the financial situation of the student.
- Master’s degree students are eligible for a maximum of 2 years of scholarship.
- Ph.D. students can receive the scholarship for a maximum of 3 years.
- Scholarship renewal is based on the student’s annual performance.
- Scholarship recipients are required to participate in annual conferences and events to become part of the bursary network and contribute.
Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship: Requirements & Eligibility:
To be eligible for this bursary, students must meet the following criteria:
- National of South Africa, Namibia, or Zimbabwe.
- Refugee status in South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Namibia.
- Normally resident in one of the above countries.
- Completed matric.
- Enrolled in or applied to study at a South African university.
- Possess a good first degree or undergraduate qualification with second class upper division or equivalent.
- Studying for a Masters or Ph.D. full-time, part-time, or via distance learning.
