The Department Student Affairs (DSA) Sport offers both competitive and recreational sporting codes on all campuses and cater for all types of sportsmen and -women.

In addition to the provision of 23 competitive sporting codes, we also offer information and workshops on healthy lifestyle issues such as healthy eating, how to overcome addictions, weight loss programs and stress relief.

Over the past years, our sport teams have either won or were runners up at USSA Tournaments where all the Universities in South Africa compete against each other. In 2013 the female basketball team ended in second place and the men in third. The netball team won their league at the USSA tournament in 2013. CPUT produced quite a few national male and female basketball players over the years, including the ladies national team captain, Emmerentia Ledwada. We also had students playing for the national ladies soccer team in 2013 and a female student in the SA u/21 netball team. Simphiwe Dumengane and Likhona Mbotho came third in Kata at the USSA Karate Tournament.

We also boast with some of the best coaches in South Africa. Kimathi Toboti, head coach female basketball is also the head coach of the SA basketball female team. Siya Tyandela, also a staff member, is a Full Contact Coach and has Western Cape Kyokushiam and National Karateka colours. He has participated internationally in several world tournaments and European tournaments.

For the past two years the CPUT Chess Club (Bellville campus) grew from having only 10 members to having 40 members. Their growth was not only in numbers but also in performance as they were promoted to play in the Premier Division of the WP Chess league in 2013. They also, for the first time, performed so well at USSA level that they got third position overall, beating most of well-known universities.

Our female football club is currently playing in the Sasol league which is the top league for women’s football in the country.

CPUT Handball has been nominated by the Minister of Sport, Mr Fikile Mbalula, to introduce Handball in all universities and FET Colleges in the Western Cape as a pilot project and roll it out to all other universities and colleges in South Africa. The road show has kicked off and Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Western Cape Handball have become partners in this exciting project. CPUT Handball and SAHF Coach, Shaun Mokhine and Nicola Scholl are facilitators of the program.
