About the Company – CSIR:
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is the premier research and development organization in South Africa. Established in 1945, it is an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation, which is responsible for scientific research, including space programs. The CSIR is the largest research and development organization in Africa, accounting for approximately 10% of the continent’s R&D budget. It is headquartered in Pretoria and has a staff base of around 3000 scientific and technical researchers.
The CSIR focuses on seven main areas: Industry, Energy, Natural Environment, Built Environment, Digital Environment, Health, and Defence and Security. It conducts research, technology development, and innovation in these fields.
CSIR Bursary Program:
The CSIR is offering a merit-based bursary program for the 2024 academic year. The bursary is aimed at full-time, unemployed students pursuing qualifications in areas deemed a priority by the CSIR, with a focus on research, technology development, innovation, and corporate/support areas. The program aims to attract suitably qualified applicants, with an emphasis on encouraging female and black students to apply.
Bursaries will be awarded for undergraduate and postgraduate (Honours, MSc, and PhD) studies in various fields, including Data Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Physics, and many more.
The bursary will cover expenses such as registration fees, tuition fees, books, a laptop allowance, accommodation, and a living allowance, depending on the level of study. Bursary recipients will also receive full support and opportunities for vacation work.
After graduation, bursary recipients will be required to work for the CSIR, with one year of employment for every year of funding received.
Eligibility Requirements:
The eligibility requirements vary depending on the level of study:
For undergraduate to Honours studies, applicants must be South African citizens, currently in Matric or have completed Matric, studying or intending to study full-time at a recognized public university in South Africa, and meet specific subject requirements.
For Masters and Doctoral applicants, additional requirements include being self-motivated, having excellent scientific writing and organizational skills, and demonstrating the ability to work independently and within a team.

Applications must be submitted online through the CSIR Bursary Application portal. Required documents include ID documents, curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, proof of acceptance or registration at a university, and other supporting documents.
The closing date for the CSIR Bursary is 21 August.
