About DSI-CSIR:

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a prominent research and development organization in Africa, established in 1945. It is a vital contributor to research and development activities on the continent, receiving approximately 10 percent of the total African research and development budget. The CSIR is the largest and most significant research and development organization in Africa.

The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) is dedicated to South African socioeconomic development through research and innovation. The DSI collaborates with various entities and programs to advance science and improve the well-being of South Africans.

DSI-CSIR Bursaries 2025-2026:

The DSI-CSIR bursary program, under the Inter-Bursary Support (IBS) program, aims to provide financial support to qualified postgraduate students. This collaboration between the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the CSIR supports students in specific research areas.

Bursaries are available for postgraduate studies in the following fields:

  • Bio-catalysis
  • Biopharming
  • Bioprocessing
  • Health
  • ICT
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS)
  • Microsystems Technology
  • Mining
  • Modelling and Digital Sciences
  • Titanium (Manufacturing Elements)
  • Photonics

The IBS program offers varying bursary amounts based on the student’s level of study, ranging from R100,000 per year for honours, fourth-year engineering, and postgraduate diploma students, up to R140,000 per year for doctoral students. Additionally, a one-time laptop allowance of R10,000 is provided.

DSI-CSIR Bursaries Requirements and Eligibility:

To be eligible for this bursary, applicants must meet several minimum entry requirements, including:

  • South African citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Enrollment in, or intention to enroll in, a full-time postgraduate program in the specified fields.
  • Enrollment or intention to enroll at a South African public university.
  • Not being employed full-time.
  • Meeting age and academic performance criteria depending on the level of study (honours, master’s, or doctoral).

Application Process:

Applications must be submitted online through the DSI-CSIR Bursary Application 2025-2026 portal. Applicants should review the DSI-CSIR IBS General Guidelines before applying.

Documents Required:

Applicants must submit the following mandatory documents with their online application:

  • Certified copy of identification (South African citizens) or passport and proof of permanent residence (international students).
  • Certified copy of the university degree certificate.
  • University transcripts/records on the institution’s letterhead.
  • Proof of enrollment or application to a university on the institution’s letterhead.
  • Detailed CV.
  • Recommendation letter from the supervisor (for Master’s or Doctoral applicants).
  • Admission letter indicating full-time registration (if available, for successful applicants).

Closing Date:

The application deadline for the DSI-CSIR Bursaries 2025-2026 is August 30. Ensure that your application is submitted before this closing date, as late applications will not be accepted.
