How to apply?

Only parents applying for Grade 1 and 8 learners may apply to a maximum of 5 schools per child using the Online Admission System. ​
You may logon on to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za OR
Go to any Public Ordinary School in your area, any District Office or the Provincial Department of Education for face to face assistance. In addition, the Office of the Premier, identified public libraries and community centres will serve as walk-in centres to assist with applications

When making the first application, parents may use one of the following application options:

Home address

Work Address

Sibling

Previous School – Applicable to Grade 8 only

Parents can apply for a maximum of five schools per child using the Online Admission System. The application process involves selecting an application option and completing the application page. The online admission placement period for Grade 1 starts on October 3 and ends on November 30, and parents will receive SMS notifications during this period. Therefore, parents can apply for Grade 1 in Gauteng for 2025-2026 by using the Online Admission System and following the instructions provided on the application page.

GDE Admissions Application Eligibility:

  • Only apply for learners that are going to Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2025-2026 can apply on the GDE Admissions Online System
  • Priority is given to applicants who apply to a school with a feeder zone that covers their home address. Therefore, the first applicant is not prioritised for placement at the school applied to
  • Parents must apply for ALL learners that are currently in Grade R and in Grade 7;
  • Please go directly to a school in your area. the school will advise on availability of space
  • You cannot apply online for a child that is to repeat Grade 1 / Grade 8.
  • Non-South African Citizens may apply
  • To apply for a neighbour’s child or sister’s / brother’s child, DO NOT use your own profile. You must Register the details (ID Number, cell phone number, address) of your neighbour / sister / brother for their children’s applications.
  • You can apply to a maximum of 5 different schools for one child
  • Each parent may apply for a maximum of 3 children per Grade. This means each parent can apply to Grade 1 for 3 different learners to Grade 8 for another 3 different learners.
  • Parents for different household are allowed a total of 5 applications for each learner
  • You cannot use the GDE Admissions Online System to apply to schools in other provinces
  • The child must be five, turning six by 30 June 2025-2026. You will not be able to apply for a child younger than this. There is no age limit to apply to Grade 1. However, over-aged learners may be redirected for admission to the relevant
  • You must make 2 applications if you are applying for twins, the System will later recognize the same date of birth in your profile to ensure that your twins go to the same school
  • Parents have 30 days to apply and must NOT form crowds at Walk-in Centres
