Transitional Nursing Program Overview
General Nursing Registration Program (Regulation 683)
The final date to enroll in the transitional Bridging program for Enrolled Nurses, which results in qualification as a General Nurse, was set for December 31, 2019. This indicates that accredited educational bodies may continue to provide this program within the set guidelines.
Program Length: 2 Years
Educational Offerings in Nursing and Community Health
It is crucial to understand the distinction between formal nursing programs and Community Health Worker programs, as they fall under different oversight organizations.
Nursing programs, now classified as higher education programs, require accreditation and registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and the Council on Higher Education (CHE).
In contrast, Community Health Worker programs are vocational in nature and must be accredited by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA). These may be offered as comprehensive qualifications or specific skill sets.
Furthermore, educational institutions may also present non-credit short learning programs designed for ongoing professional development.
Updates in Nursing Education
The SANC has initiated a transition in nursing education, gradually replacing legacy qualifications with modernized credentials, detailed in SANC circular 7/2016.
Legacy programs include:
- Nursing Auxiliary Course
- Enrolled Nurse Course
- Bridging Course for Enrolled Nurses
The new framework introduces the Higher Certificate for Auxiliary Nurses and the Diploma for General Nurses, with enrollment starting in January 2019. Only accredited institutions are authorized to advertise and enroll students for these qualifications.
Admission Requirements: Prospective students must satisfy the minimum entry criteria for their desired qualification, as specified by the National Senior Certificate or equivalent.
For instance, a National Senior Certificate indicating eligibility for diploma or higher certificate studies does not qualify a candidate for degree programs.
Prerequisites for New Nursing Programs:
- Communication Skills at NQF Level 4
- Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4
- Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3
- Life Science at NQF Level 4
