HORTGRO Bursary 2025-2026

HORTGRO Overview:

HORTGRO has its roots dating back to 1652 when the first apple seeds were planted in the Cape of Good Hope. This marked the beginning of fruit experimentation by farmers, including the cultivation of other fruits that were sold to passing ships. HORTGRO was established to address the support needs of fruit producers and farmers, focusing on various aspects of the fruit industry, including production, research and technology, communication, markets, and transformation.

HORTGRO Bursaries:

The HORTGRO bursary program, initiated 14 years ago, has made significant investments, totaling around R35 million, to contribute to building a sustainable agricultural workforce. Funding for the program comes from HORTGRO, as well as AgriSETA and the Deciduous Fruit Industry Development Trust. Currently, HORTGRO sponsors 68 students, comprising 27 undergraduate students and 41 postgraduate students. These students are pursuing degrees in fields related to Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, and Business Management at accredited institutions in South Africa, including the University of Pretoria, Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute, University of Limpopo, University of the Free State, Cape Town University of Technology, and Stellenbosch University.
