The South African SETAs were established in 1994 and are a statutory body. They are responsible for the issuing of SETAs, which are documents that certify that a person has passed an examination for registration as an engineer with the South African Engineering Council. The South African Council for Geoscience and Engineering Science (SAGE) issues SETAs.
The SETAs can be issued in either a provisional or permanent capacity. The provisional SETA is valid to practice while waiting for the permanent document to be issued. A person who applies for a provisional SETA must submit an application, pass three parts of an examination, and pay a fee. A permanent SETA cannot be revoked.
