When is women’s day celebrated in South Africa?

In South Africa, Women’s Day is celebrated on August 9th. This public holiday commemorates the 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the apartheid pass laws that required black South Africans to carry passes when they left their homes.

What does women’s day represent in South Africa?

Now, Women’s Day is a celebration of the progress made by women in South Africa and is used as a day to reflect on the unfinished business of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The day is also used to celebrate the successes of women in all walks of life.

This year, the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities is hosting a series of events to mark Women’s Day. These include a national flag raising ceremony, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Union Buildings, and a women’s empowerment expo.
