Furthermore, families with two to three individuals were more numerous in cities (38.2 percent) than in rural regions (30.7 percent). Households of six or more persons, on the other hand, accounted for 20.5 percent of all households in rural regions, about twice as prevalent as in urban areas.

 

Principal sources of income

In 2019, wages or grants were the primary source of income for the vast majority of South African families. Approximately 10.7 million families got regular earnings, while 7.9 million households received government-paid social handouts for residents in need of public assistance.
