South Africa has 43 892 registered medical practitioners in 2016. 25.85% of these were black.

Historically, the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has been South Africa’s premier medical school in terms of generating black graduates. They admit around 250 individuals every year (from approximately 8 300 applications) and have a quota system in effect for the first year of the MBChB degree program.
