Pedi
The Pedi or Bapedi are a southern African ethnic group that speak Pedi or Sepedi, a dialect of the Sotho-Tswana enthnolinguistic group. They are also known as the Northern Sotho or Basotho ba Leboa and the Marota or Bamaroteng. One of the 11 official languages of South Africa is referred to as Northern Sotho. Pedi is one of 33 dialects that make up Northern Sotho, also known as Sesotho sa Leboa.
Their history
It is believed that the Pedi’s forefathers moved from Central Africa about 500 years ago and then settled in the current area. The Pedi empire, which was founded on a number of military wars with neighboring peoples, emerged after an initial era of peaceful settlement. The Pedi’s fortunes reached their height under the reign of King Thulare in the early 19th century, but they were ultimately routed by the armies of Mzilikazi, who would go on to form the Ndebele (Matabele) people. After regaining strength, the Pedi successfully withstood Afrikaner incursions into their region in the 1850s, 1860s, and ’70s, but in 1879 the British entirely overran the Pedi. Conflicts between opposing Pedi leaders resulted from the British dividing the Pedi kingdom into two pieces in 1896, each under a different monarch.
Pedi as social unit
The kgoro is the fundamental Pedi social and living unit. It is a semicircular residential cluster of homes that houses an extended family that is built around a group of related males but may also include other people. Frequently, kgoros are founded by an influential chief’s son. The head of the executive and judicial branches is known as the Pedi chief (kgosi). But in modern South Africa, the traditional chief must strike a balance between those roles and the country’s legal system, which was inspired by Europe.
Their system of belief
The Pedi have a belief in gods and ancestors, and they think that they can communicate with the gods through their ancestors about their needs. Additionally, they think that boys and girls should attend initiation school when the time is perfect. They also believed that anyone who disobeys the ways things are done in the community in terms of culture and tradition will be expelled.

These Sotho speakers, whose numbers are estimated at 7 million, make up the second-largest African language group in South Africa. Three million members of the Sotho and other ethnic groups living nearby, the most of whom reside in Lesotho, reside outside of South Africa. Three groups can be distinguished among the Sotho.
First are the Northern Sotho, commonly known as Pedi and Bapedi. A confederation of minor chiefdoms that had been created in what would later become the Northern Transvaal before the 17th century gave rise to the Pedi civilisation (Northern Province).
