How Many Political Parties in South Africa?

There will be 48 parties available to South Africans voting on election day for a new national parliament, more than at any election since the end of white minority rule in 1994.

Elections for nine provincial legislatures will take place on the same day, and many more political parties will be running.

Which Party Dominates?

Every legislative election since 1994 has been won by the African National Congress (ANC). According to opinion surveys, it will again take home a majority of the 400 seats in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, at the next election.

The ANC’s share of the parliamentary vote has declined from a high of more than 69 percent in 2004 to 62 percent in 2014, and President Cyril Ramaphosa is under pressure to reverse this trend.

Significant Opposition and Competitors?

This time, the Democratic Alliance (DA), the largest opposition party, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a radical Marxist organization, are the ANC’s main competitors.
Every five years, there are elections for the legislature and the provinces, and seats are distributed using a proportional representation system.
In certain provinces, such as the Western Cape, which the DA now controls but where the party is likely to lose support, and Gauteng, an economic center where support for the ANC is anticipated to decline, coalition governments may be formed, according to some surveys.

What are the main parties in South Africa?

AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS
Liberation hero Nelson Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president after spearheading the struggle against the repressive apartheid state, led the ANC to victory in 1994.
With the exception of the Western Cape, it has governed every province for the previous 25 years and has been the dominant party in the National Assembly.

DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE
The DA received 22% of the vote in the 2014 legislative election, giving it the second-highest representation in the National Assembly.

It was founded by white liberals who opposed apartheid and can be traced back to the Progressive Party. It has expanded in part as a result of mergers with other parties.

ECONOMIC FREEDOM FIGHTERS

In 2014, the EFF received 6% of the vote, making it the third-largest party in the legislature. According to some surveys, the party’s vote share increased nearly double this time.

The party dominates politics thanks to its far-left ideas, which include proposals to nationalize mining.
