The process of becoming an attorney is as follows:
Getting the required grades to pass matriculation.
You must take the right subjects in matric to be able to move on to the next stage in becoming an attorney. To be admitted to UP’s Undergraduate LLB programme, you must have an APS of at least 32. You will also need to pass English as a first additional language or home language with 60-69%.
You just need an APS of 20 or higher to get into the UNISA LLB programme. In addition, you must have achieved at least a 50% mark in the language you want to study.
You may complete your matriculation at any school in the world that offers a national senior certificate or similar programme.
Studying For The LLB Exam
Having finished matriculation and fulfilled the university’s LLB programme admission standards, you may study for your LLB degree at any South African university.
To obtain an LLB degree from UP, you must study for at least four years. However, you may need longer if you are unable to pass all your courses. We urge you to work hard and do your best in order to finish within four years, which will allow you to continue to the next stage of becoming an attorney in South Africa.
Students studying at Unisa usually take more than four years to finish their degree, as Unisa requires at least four years of study. However, Unisa also offers degrees that require at least 10 years of study.
You may work at a registered law firm while on vacation.
A large number of law firms in South Africa offer vacation jobs to 1st and 2nd year law students. However, vacation jobs are only offered to 3rd and 4th year law students.
During the July and December vacations, doing vacation work will separate you from your peers and allow you to gain real-world experience in doing law work. This will look good on your resume and help you get a job once you graduate.
You must finish your articles in law before you graduate.
Working as a candidate attorney for 2 years is required to obtain your law articles. This must be done at a registered law firm in South Africa. You will be under the supervision of a registered attorney during this time.
You must have completed your LLB degree prior to working as a candidate attorney and doing your Articles of Clerkship. However, we advise that you apply at these firms while you are studying to avoid wasting time.
