An excellent used race-ready kart for the kids will cost between R15 000 and R20 000 (with a used engine) (with new engine). There are less expensive chassis available, however it is not recommended because one component failure can result in “no components” and require a new purchase to continue racing. It is preferable to get a kart that is three years old or newer.

The majority of used karts on the market are 2-stroke models, and since the power delivery is substantially different, the most recent chassis type is required to compete in 2-stroke.

Currently, the bare engine costs less than R2500 (yes, brand new!). Costs for de-restriction, dyno tuning, sealing, a full exhaust system, engine mountings, a green performance filter, and a clutch are additional R3500 and R7500, respectively.

How quickly do go-karts travel?

about 40 to 50 mph

This is a maintained speed that is safe and as controlled as you can be. Most karts have a top speed of 40 to 50 mph. It’s a comfortable speed in that you won’t fly off the track and injure other racers or spectators.

What are the steps to racing in South Africa?

In order to receive a racing licence in South Africa, you must be a member of a motorsports organisation. By joining Zwartkops Racing Club, which MSA recognises as one of these clubs, you are qualified for an MSA licence. You can sign up to be a member of the Zwartkops Racing Club for a low annual cost of just R200.

Are go-karts fuel-powered?

The majority of adult go-karts you’ll see at our tracks have a four-stroke petrol engine that is about 200cc in size, similar to the one in a car, whilst kid karts have a smaller 120cc engine.

How safe is go-karting?

The fact is that go-karting is not only a fun sport, but it is also quite safe for both adults and children. Every safety precaution is taken into account, and since today’s karts and courses are safer than ever, kids may enjoy themselves to the fullest without having to worry.
