How Fila Was Birth

Ettore and Giansevero Fila, brothers, began working at the Giuseppe Regis and Figli di Coggiola wool mill in Biella, Piedmont, Italy, in 1906. The wool mill changed its name to Fratelli Fila S.p.A. in 1911 after the Regis brothers left the business. Fila was formally founded in 1923. It used to produce mostly undergarments for residents of the Italian Alps. With a sponsorship agreement with tennis player Björn Borg, it transitioned into sportswear in the 1970s, and as a result the brand gained popularity.

Change Of Ownership

Italian chemical corporation SNIA S.p.A. lost control of Fila in 1988 to Fiat-controlled holding company Gemina, which was eventually reorganized as Holding di Partecipazioni. In 1991, Fila decided to concentrate on footwear in the US rather than apparel in Europe and bought out its US license. By 1995, Fila was the fastest-growing footwear company in America because to high-profile sponsorships from basketball players Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse. Holding di Partecipazioni sold the company to US-based hedge fund Cerberus Capital Management in 2003 after it overcommitted to pricey athlete endorsements at a time when margins were being squeezed. With the exception of Fila Korea, an independent firm using the brand under a license, Cerberus owned Fila through holding company Sports Brands International, which also owned and ran all Fila enterprises worldwide.
