How To Become An Importer In South Africa
Who’s an importer.
All importers of goods into South Africa, whether domestic or foreign, are required to register as importers, including those who bring in continuous transmission commodities (CTC).
Before a foreign importer may be registered to import goods into South Africa (whether they are an individual or a legal entity), they must register as an importer and choose a registered agent who is based in South Africa.

What steps are involved in becoming an importer?
Forms DA185 and DA185.4A1 must be completed if you are a prospective importer
and deliver them to the appropriate Customs Offices, where a Customs and Excise client code will be given to you. The following paperwork is required to submit with the application:
Your municipal energy and water account serves as proof of address.
copy of your identity paper that has been certified.
an authenticated copy of one of the following documents from the Registrar of Companies:
Close Company formation; corporation formation.
the following documents, certified copies:
VAT, IT, PAYE, SDL, and UIF letters from SARS to confirm revenue registration details; Resolutions/consents or other authorities as appropriate; Telkom and/or mobile accounts not older than three months to confirm contact information.
In order to demonstrate bank information, choose one of the following:
A statement that attests to the bank account’s banking information.
A clear copy of an original bank statement that has been bank certified, or an original bank statement with bank certification;
A certified auto bank statement from a bank; or
A genuine letter from the bank, printed on the institution’s letterhead.
Branches code and account number:
A genuine letter on letterhead from the bank; a genuine auto bank statement.
You must be at least 18 years old and reside permanently in the RSA.
The following rules apply if your application is for a license to operate a warehouse, clearing agent, or removal of goods:
Application fees, as well as the planned warehouse plan in cases where a warehouse is involved.

“Foreign principals,” also known as foreign importers, exporters, and road transporters of bonded cargo,
Aclear copy of an original bank statement that has been bank certified, or an original bank statement with bank certification;
A certified auto bank statement from a bank; or
A genuine letter from the bank, printed on the institution’s letterhead.
