How To Connect A Ceiling Fan In South Africa

How To Connect A Ceiling Fan In South Africa

You must have at least a basic understanding of how electricity functions as well as how your home’s electrical system is set up in order to perform any electrical work, so unless you are completely confident in your abilities, do not attempt this project yourself. Instead, hire a qualified, registered electrician to install the fan instead.

Tools required

Volt-ohm multimeter wire strippers on a stepladder

Screwdriver (cordless is your best bet) (cordless is your best bet)

Wire-cutting pliers

Steps to take

  • Your distribution board’s pertinent circuit breakers should be turned off. Turn off every circuit breaker, including your main switch, if you are unclear of which one to use. Stick a big note over the board if you’re working on anything electrical as a safety measure.Continuing use of the power could cause fatal injuries. Therefore, it is better to take two safeguards than one.

  • Put your stepladder in the most comfortable position for you in relation to the fitting point. Never try to overshoot. Remove the present fixture, which is a double swiveling fixture in this situation.

Eliminate any mounting hardware.

  • Make sure the power is shut off once again.
  • Attach the fan support bracket to the batten above the ceiling board while pulling the wires to one side.
  • The groove in the half-ball should be seated on the protrusion in the bracket when the fan support column is slid into place. This will prevent the fan from twisting in the bracket and potentially pulling wires free and resulting in a short.
  • Depending on the type of fan you’re installing, connect the fan light and motor to the bracket electrical fitting; this employs a male/female connector that can only be connected one way. Three circular connections and one square connection are used. It has color-coding as well.
  • Now for the clever part… Making a block and connecting the fixed wiring to it will make it easier for you to move the stiff, difficult-to-maneuver fixed wiring about. In this instance, as previously explained… Black to blue on the right, RED to brown on the left, green/bare brass to green-yellow = earth in the middle. Reposition these wires above the ceiling board after using the multimeter to verify that the connections are secure. There are now only the three extended lengths of flexible wiring visible.
  • The fan’s electrical fitting on the bracket is simply connected with the flexible wires, ensuring that all three are connected. The connections made for the electricity. All that’s left to do is take off the brown paper covering on the fan shaft, loosen and remove the mounting bracket’s locking screws as necessary, slide the cup fitting up, and lock it in place. Restart the electrical system and make sure the fan and light are operational. If they function, restart everything and finish by installing the blades. Choose between the light wood finish on one of these or the white finish on the other.
  • DO NOT overtighten the three screws since the glass expands as it heats up and will break if the screws are too tight. Just enough to prevent the shade from falling free but still allowing it to rotate, tighten them with your fingertips. the glass shade can grow without risk of injury because there is enough room between the screw heads and it.
