SARS stands for South African Revenue Services. Each and every taxpayer there is given a South African Tax number. You need a legitimate South African identity document in order to obtain a Tax number. One needs to be either a South African national or a South African permanent resident to obtain a South African identity card. 16 years or older is the minimum age to obtain a South African ID. If you work outside of South Africa for the South African government or one of its statutory bodies, you may be eligible to receive this ID (along with your partners and children).
