How to grow bell peppers in South Africa

How to grow bell peppers in South Africa

In subtropical climates, peppers are warm-season plants that are practically cultivated all year long; in humid climates, summertime fungus illnesses are an issue. In temperate climates, seed can be sown from early spring to midsummer, but in cold climates with short growing seasons, it is recommended to plant right away once all risk of frost has passed.

Bell peppers (Capsicum frutescens) are known as green peppers because of their green fruit, which typically becomes red when completely developed. Additionally, there are orange, yellow, purple, and chocolate brown variations.

How to raise them

Peppers need to grow quickly, so make sure your beds are completely ready by adding tons of compost and aged manure along with an organic 2:3:2 dressing. The optimal pH range is 5.5 to 6.5. Plant the seedlings in broad light, about 40 to 50 cm apart. When they begin to flower, water frequently and fertilize every four weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer that is heavy in potassium, such as 3:1:5. Peppers begin bearing about 11 weeks after transplanting and will continue to produce fruit for several months, up until the arrival of cold weather.

Health Advantages

If the fruit is allowed to ripen on the plants, vitamin C and A content increases. The white membranes that give chilies their “bite” also assist to clear the lungs, boost circulation, and provide pain relief for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Peppers have anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antioxidant effects that help with constipation. The chili powder provides a natural high by encouraging the brain to release endorphins into the bloodstream. This is why chiles are so effective anti-depressants. A powerful antioxidant called lycopene is found in red peppers. Beta-carotene, an antioxidant that combats damaging free radicals, is abundant in yellow peppers.

Do they frequently get infested by pests?

Fruit flies can be a problem and do a lot of damage to pepper plants, despite the fact that they are generally pest and disease free. Spray soapy water on the leaves to remove any aphids that have caused them to become twisted and wrinkled. Caterpillars that devour leaves and green vegetable bugs can both be an issue. In hot, humid weather or if the plants are exposed to too much shadow, powdery mildew can harm the plants. Water is only available in these conditions in the mornings, therefore make sure the leaves are completely dry by dusk and, if necessary, spray with an organic fungicide.

What month is ideal for planting bell peppers?

In Santa Clara County, peppers thrive when the soil is warmed and the daily high is frequently around 75° F, which is usually in late April or early May. Flowers will sterilise at temperatures between 50 and 55 oF, and fruits will develop improperly. Starting with pristine containers and new potting soil will help you control the environment for your seeds.

When is the best time of year to plant bell peppers?

Pepper planting season. 8 to 10 weeks prior to your last spring frost date, sow pepper seeds inside in pots. After the threat has passed, plant pepper seedlings or transplants outdoors in about 2 to 3 weeks. The soil has warmed to 65°F (18°C) after the risk of frost has passed.
