Is Shark Cage Diving Safe in South Africa?

Shark cage diving has become very popular in South Africa, where there are now several marketed venues to see these amazing underwater beasts.

One of those activities that is either at the top of your bucket list or that you believe you will never undertake in a million lives is shark cage diving. If you are one of the first, you may have wondered if it is safe for you and good for the sharks.

What Materials Are Used in Shark Cages?

No specific material must be used to create shark cages. Tour operators frequently promote “strong metals,” which may seem secure enough to allay some fear but are so ambiguous that you wonder exactly what metal they are.It is strong metal. Some operators will specify galvanized or stainless steel to be more precise. Since sharks rarely do much more than bite on a corner to see what the cage is made of, most metals will typically protect you from them in the water.

Has anyone ever died when shark cage diving?

Many people think shark cage diving is safe because no one has ever perished from a shark attack during an accident. In 2005, a British tourist in South Africa who was in a cage when a great white attacked him came the closest to death anyone has ever experienced on a cage dive with a shark. Continually attempting to bite through the bars, the shark damaged one of the buoys that keeps the cage afloat. The shark was repelled by the diver by jabbing at its head, confusing the animal, forcing it to escape the cage and swim to the surface where it was saved by the boat captain.

Have a Shark Broken a Cage before?

The shark in the Jaws movie savagely torches the cage. The scene was a real shark, despite the fact that it might have appeared to be a Hollywood production. The destruction of a cage by a shark has been documented in other instances as well. In this video, a shark becomes imprisoned in a cage. Despite the shark and cage suffering severe damage, all cage divers manage to escape unscathed.

As with anything involving open oceans and close contact with predatory animals, shark cage diving has its risks. Shark cage diving is regarded to be extremely safe, though. There is little to worry about when cage diving with sharks because there have been no shark-related fatalities and only one reported drowning during bad weather since it became prevalent at tourist sites with great whites (mostly Australia and South Africa) in the late 1990s.
