Is Weed legal in South Africa?

Cannabis in South Africa has been decriminalized through the country’s Constitutional Court for private consumption by means of adults in private.

Are There Any Exceptions?

However, laws prohibiting use outside of one’s non-public dwelling and buying and promoting hashish remain. Since regulations towards the purchase of products containing hashish continue to be in effect, it is
unclear how the ruling can be enforced.

How Was It Used Before Prohibition?

Before prohibition against the plant used to be lifted in 2018, advocates forced the government to modify its laws, which first confined cannabis in 1922, to enable exemptions for scientific use, spiritual practices, and different purposes. Dagga is the Afrikaans period usually referred to for cannabis; it derives from the Khoikhoi word dacha, which was once used by the early European colonial settlers in the Western Cape.

Introduction Of Cannabis To West Africa

Cannabis is a concept to have been added to Africa by using early Arab or Indian traders. It was once already infamous use in South Africa via the indigenous Khoisan and Bantu peoples before European settlement in the Cape in 1652. It was once traditionally used by using Basotho to ease childbirth. According to writer Hazel Crampton, historical Afrikaner recipes for teas and foods exist which make use of the plant. Use of the plant was once related to normal African populations and a decreased financial status.

Has There Been Research Into The Use Of Cannabis?

Research by the Medical Research Council (MRC) indicated that the range of cannabis users in South Africa went from 2.2 million in 2004 to 3.2 million in 2008. In 2003, Interpol rated South Africa as the fourth-largest cannabis producer in the world. The Institute for Security Studies said that most cannabis seized in the  UK and a 0.33 globally had South African origins.
