Kitesurfing is a wind-powered surface watersport using a kite and a board to move across the water. Kitesurfing harnesses the power of the wind through a large parachute type kite to propel a rider across the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard)

How dangerous is kitesurfing?

Choosing to kitesurf in cross-offshore or offshore winds is malpractice as you risk getting blown out to sea. If this happens consider releasing your kite, leaving your board and swimming back to shore. Jumping in shallow water is also dangerous and not worth the risk.

How long does it take to learn to kitesurf?

With riding upwind as a goal, it should take you between 15 and 20 hours to learn to kitesurf, including instructor training. Actual learning time will depend on your learning skills, fitness level, wind and water conditions, the frequency of your sessions, and the quality of your instruction.

How much does it cost to kitesurf?

You can get started by investing anywhere from $1000 to $3000, depending on the quality and newness of gear you choose. A kite, board, harness, bar, and lines are all thatýs truly needed (and wind), but you may require a life-vest (PFD), wetsuit, booties, gloves, hood, a couple of kites for varying conditions, etc.

Is kitesurfing difficult to learn?

Compared to other water/wind-sports kiteboarding is relatively easy to learn. The learning curve compared to windsurfing is faster, and the kiteboarder will be more advanced after their first year. Kiteboarding is harder to learn than wakeboarding because it is more technical.

What is the best wind speed for kitesurfing?

Wind Speed: For a beginner, you should train on the beach (not in water) at wind speeds around 7-20 knots (~23 mph) with a trainer kite (or 7-10 knots [~8-12 mph] with a normal small kite)

What is easier kitesurfing or windsurfing?

The center of balance and strength moves around much more when windsurfing because you are close to the sail. Kite surfers do not have this problem. Kitesurfing is easier to start and has a shorter learning curve. Kitesurfing also has more power for waves since it has a larger wind window.
