For as long as there have been stories about mermaids, there has been speculation about where they might live and if that key exists. Are they found only in saltwater? Do they reside exclusively in freshwater rivers? Or do they make their home somewhere more unusual? And so, here are five places where you can find a mermaid in South Africa:
Cape Town Harbour
Various accounts of mermaids are seen in Cape Town Harbour and Table Bay. There are also reports of a mermaid sighting from a ferry from Robben Island to Cape Town. In the 18th century, a sailor named George Carter was sailing in the Cape Town Harbour when he saw a “gigantic sea-woman with the head of a pig and the body of a whale and with a single huge fin on the back.” This sighting happened on the 26th of June 1783. In the 19th century, a passenger named W.B. Kingsford, traveling on an East Indiaman, described seeing a mermaid in Table Bay. The boat was about a mile from the shore when the passengers noticed a creature in the water that looked like a woman with long hair, except that she had “the head of a fish and a long fin down her back.”
Under the Big Rock
You’ll find it Under the Big Rock near the Great Fish River mouth in the eastern part of South Africa. This would have been a good place for mermaids to live with its warm and salty water. There is a story that a fisherman once caught a mermaid here. He took it home and kept it in a large crate. People came from all over to see it, and the mermaid was very popular until it died a few days later.
Coega River
This river is one of South Africa’s most mysterious places. People have reported strange noises, shadows, and lights in the area and feelings of being watched. Coega River is said to be the home of mermaids, which would make sense because of the river’s warm and salty water. In 1953, a newspaper reported seeing a mermaid in the Coega River. According to the newspaper, it was a very large creature with greenish-grey skin.

They described the mermaid as having “long, dark, streaming hair, a greenish-brown skin, a long, fish-like tail, and webbed hands and feet.” They say she swam very quickly with a large fish in her hands. She threw the fish away when she noticed the people looking at her. Then she dived speedily and disappeared.
