Official provisions and conditions for bursaries

Bursaries are awarded on the basis of an application made by the student, and not automatically. Contact details of the donors or administrators of bursary funds have been made available in this booklet in order that students might enquire regarding the application processes for specific bursaries.

Should any portion of the student’s studies have been conducted at another university, the relevant academic record must accompany the application, when applying for bursaries administered by NMMU.

No incomplete or late forms will be accepted.

Students who cancel their studies could forfeit bursaries that have been awarded to them. The university may claim reimbursement of the amount paid out to the student.

Before submitting an application, students should ensure that they are eligible according to the criteria specified by the funder.

Closing dates

Applications should be made in the year prior to the studies for which the bursary is required, by the closing date supplied in the information for each bursary.

NMMU Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship

NMMU’s Vice-Chancellor introduced a premier scholarship to attract top achievers in the country to register for an NMMU undergraduate programme of their choice. The scholarship, currently valued at R89 000 per annum is awarded to between 25 and 30 candidates each year. The scholarship is renewable for each year of a first NMMU undergraduate degree or diploma, provided that the student continues to render excellent academic performance.

Candidates must achieve an Academic Point Score (APS) of 49 or more in their final grade 12 examination in order to be considered for this scholarship. Applications must be submitted on the prescribed application form to the Marketing & Corporate Relations office on or before the closing date. Candidates may also be nominated by their School Principal or by a Dean of an NMMU faculty. T’s & C’s apply.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

NSFAS is a government loan scheme, with the added incentive of a bursary conversion (maximum of 40%) depending on academic performance.

The purpose of these loans is to assist students who have the academic potential to succeed, but who do not have the financial means to gain access to tertiary institutions. The loan is determined according to a means test. As loans do not necessarily cover all costs, students are encouraged to seek additional funding from other sources. The family is also expected to make a contribution towards the student’s studies.

Academically deserving and financially needy students have the opportunity to apply for a loan from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), part of which can be converted to a bursary, subject to academic results.

Loans do not always cover tuition fees and other study costs in full. The amount of the loan is determined, interalia, by the family’s financial need and the student’s cost of study.

NSFAS Applications

Applications for financial assistance from NSFAS must me made on the NSFAS website (www.nfas.org.za). Full details regarding applications are available on the NSFAS website.

Students are advised to retain the confirmation slip as proof that they have submitted on a certain date.

Awaiting the outcome of the application does not relieve students of the obligation to settle their debt by the due dates. Students applying for assistance should not assume that the application will be successful.

Recipients of NSFAS loans are exempted from paying the initial tuition payments, provided that written confirmation of financial assistance is received prior to registration and that the amount exceeds the required initial payment.

The cancellation of studies/modules will result in the reversal of the bursary/loan allocations and the student will be liable for the entire account balance. Refunding of credit balances is not allowed.
