ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP PROVIDER – NMU & AIDC

Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), is a comprehensive university that offers professional and vocational training across its 7 campuses. The university was established in 2005 through the merger of the PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University (Vista PE). NMU provides a wide range of diploma, degree, and doctoral level qualifications.

The Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) and operates under the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED). AIDC works to support the automotive industry and drive economic development.

ABOUT THE NMU/ AIDC FELLOWSHIP – FIELDS COVERED

The Department of Mechatronics and the Advanced Mechatronics Technology Centre at Nelson Mandela University are offering Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the field of Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing. This fellowship aims to address the shortage of highly skilled experts in solving industry-related problems in vehicle production and component manufacturing.

The fellowship focuses on the strategic growth areas of automotive engineering and car manufacturing in the Eastern Cape province, as identified by the South African government. Selected fellows will work closely with key industry partners in the automotive sector in the Eastern Cape to identify and address industry-related problems.

ABOUT THE NMU/ AIDC FELLOWSHIP – SELECTION & DUTIES

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by Nelson Mandela University within 2 weeks of the closing date. Fellows will be involved in investigating novel methods for automotive engineering and manufacturing, designing and prototyping models, presenting findings at various forums, writing scientific articles, and participating in lecturing or tutoring engineering modules.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NMU/ AIDC FELLOWSHIP To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • South African citizenship (applicants with permanent resident status in South Africa will be considered)
  • Completion of a Doctoral qualification in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Industrial Engineering
  • Completion of the Doctoral qualification within the past 5 years
  • Proficient writing and presentation skills
  • Students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply
