Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), is a comprehensive university that offers professional and vocational training across its 7 campuses. The university was established in 2005 through the merger of the PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University. NMU provides a wide range of diploma, degree, and doctoral level qualifications.
The Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) and operates under the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED). AIDC works to support the automotive industry and drive economic development.
ABOUT THE NMU/ AIDC BURSARY – FIELDS COVERED
The Department of Mechatronics and the Advanced Mechatronics Technology Centre at Nelson Mandela University, in partnership with the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC), are offering bursaries for Masters and Doctoral studies in the field of Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing. This bursary aims to address the shortage of highly skilled experts in solving industry-related problems in vehicle production and component manufacturing.
The bursary is focused on the strategic growth areas of automotive engineering and car manufacturing in the Eastern Cape province, as identified by the South African government. Selected bursary recipients will work closely with key industry partners in the automotive sector in the Eastern Cape to identify and address industry-related problems.
ABOUT THE NMU/ AIDC BURSARY – SELECTION & DUTIES
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by Nelson Mandela University within 2 weeks of the closing date. Doctoral candidates will be involved in investigating novel methods for automotive engineering and manufacturing, presenting findings, and publishing articles. Masters candidates will focus on solving complex automotive engineering and manufacturing problems, implementing engineering solutions, and presenting findings.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NMU/ AIDC BURSARY
To be considered for the bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements: Doctoral bursary applicants:
- South African citizenship
- Completion of a Master’s degree (MSC, MEng, or MTech) in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering
- Intention to pursue a Doctoral qualification in Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing at Nelson Mandela University
- Knowledge in programming, modeling, statistics, and design of experiments
- Proficient writing and presentation skills
- Students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply
Masters bursary applicants:
- South African citizenship
- Completion of a BEng or BTech in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering
- Intention to pursue a Masters qualification in Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing at Nelson Mandela University
- Experiences in the design of electromechanical engineering, mechanical and electronics systems
- Knowledge in programming, modeling, statistics, and design of experiments
- Proficient writing and presentation skills
- Students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply
