SAMRC Internship Scholarship

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – SAMRC

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is an organization established in 1969 with the goal of improving the health and quality of life for South African citizens through research, development, and technology transfer. The SAMRC’s Division of Research Capacity Development (RCD) is responsible for funding programs that contribute to national research priorities and promote research capacity development and transformation.

ABOUT THE SAMRC INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

The SAMRC Internship Scholarship is a scholarship program offered by the South African Medical Research Council for the 2023 academic year. The scholarship is available to Black students pursuing Masters and PhD studies in Clinical/Health Research. The scholarship focuses on specific fields/research areas such as Biostatistics, Bioethics, Data Science, Demography, Digital Health, Epidemiology, Evolutionary Virology, Genomics, Health Economics, Immunology, Implementation Science, and Structural Biology.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAMRC INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for the SAMRC Internship Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident in South Africa
  • Belong to the Black population group (African Black, Colored, Indian, or Asian)
  • Have a fully developed research proposal for MSc or PhD studies
  • Conduct research within the SAMRC priority research areas
  • Be currently registered full-time at a South African university
  • For MSc students, pursue specialized Masters degrees in specific research areas
  • Have a committed research supervisor who is experienced and willing to guide the applicant until completion of the degree
  • Not be employed full-time during the course of studies (part-time teaching, clinical, or related duties of up to 9 hours per week are allowed)
  • Not hold any other scholarship, bursary, grant, or remuneration with a service binding contract
  • Not receive bursary funding from multiple South African government entities simultaneously
  • Not receive other non-binding remuneration or fellowships/grants without approval from the SAMRC
  • Not register at a different university than the one through which the application was submitted without SAMRC approval
  • Not change research supervisor after receiving the scholarship without SAMRC approval
  • Preference is given to students registered for a Doctoral degree in strategic and/or emerging research areas

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SAMRC INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

The application process for the SAMRC Internship Scholarship involves two steps:

Step 1: Complete the online application form available on the SAMRC website.

Step 2: Submit the required supporting documents by email to the specified address.

The supporting documents include a signed and completed application form, proof of South African citizenship or permanent residence, proof of university registration, ethics clearance for the research project, motivational letter, abstract of the PhD proposal, supervisor’s track record and commitment form, letter from the host SAMRC Research Unit, and a support letter detailing research funding availability.

CLOSING DATE FOR THE SAMRC INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

The closing date for applications is 27 June. It is important to submit the application before the closing date to be considered.
