ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SANSA
The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is a public entity and government agency operating under the National Department of Science and Technology (DST). Established in 2010, SANSA’s main focus is on developing and promoting aeronautics and aerospace space research. The agency utilizes data acquired from remote sensing through satellites and other projects to provide assessments related to fires, flooding, environmental phenomena, and resource management within South Africa and throughout Africa.
ABOUT THE SANSA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
SANSA is offering bursaries for postgraduate studies (Honours/4th year, MTech, Masters, DTech, and Doctoral) in various fields related to space science, engineering, and Earth observation. The fields covered include:
Earth Observation:
- Remote sensing
- Geospatial programme
- Earth system science with remote sensing
- Earth observations in ecosystems accounting
- Applications of remote sensing in environmental management, including oceans and marine, agricultural and rangelands, water resource management, mineral resource, and spatial planning
Engineering:
- Software and software systems engineering
- Aeronautical, aerospace, mechanical, electrical, electronic, mechatronic, and computer engineering
- Space, systems, antenna, and RF engineering
Space Science:
- Solar physics and space weather forecasting
- Antarctic radar studies of atmospheric gravity waves
- Multi-instrument studies of space weather
- Modelling geomagnetically induced currents in power systems
- Multi-scale ionospheric physics, structure, and dynamics
- Ionospheric and radio propagation modelling
- Theory of waves and solutions in plasmas
- Atmospheric radiation studies
- Verification of space weather forecasting

ABOUT THE SANSA BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & RENEWAL
The SANSA bursaries are awarded at the following values (subject to revision):
- Honours studies: R100,000 for 1 year (with an additional allowance determined on a case-by-case basis)
- Masters studies: R120,000 (all-inclusive) for 2 years
- PhD studies: R140,000 (all-inclusive) for 3 years
Bursary recipients may not receive bursaries exceeding the amounts mentioned above. If applicants have another bursary of a lower amount, SANSA may provide a top-up bursary to cover the difference. Masters and doctoral students must reapply for funding each year, and bursaries will be renewed based on satisfactory progress.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SANSA BURSARY
To be eligible for the SANSA bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizenship
- Strong academic potential
- Studying or intending to study towards a postgraduate qualification in one of the specified fields
- Proven financial need
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SANSA BURSARY
Applications must be submitted online through the SANSA Bursary Application for 2024. Applicants should indicate that they heard about the bursary through “https://uni24.co.za/” Supporting documentation, including certified copies of ID documents, academic records, fee statements, SANSA testimonials, and proof of undergraduate bursaries/funding (if applicable), must be submitted along with the application.
CLOSING DATE FOR THE SANSA BURSARY
The closing date for applications is 30 September . It is important to submit the application before the closing date to ensure consideration.
