South African Journal on Human Rights (SAJHR) Bursary

ABOUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN JOURNAL ON HUMAN RIGHTS (SAJHR)

The South African Journal on Human Rights (SAJHR) was established in 1985 by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) and is based at the School of Law, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It is recognized as one of the top public law journals in South Africa and publishes high-quality scholarly work for a global readership. The SAJHR is dedicated to promoting scholarship on human rights, constitutional law, and justice-related issues within South Africa.

ABOUT THE SAJHR BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The University of Witwatersrand is offering the SAJHR Postgraduate ‘Top-Up’ Bursary for the academic year. This bursary is targeted at postgraduate students pursuing an LLM degree with a focus on constitutional, human rights, and/or justice-related issues in any field at a public university in South Africa.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAJHR BURSARY

To be eligible for the SAJHR bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Be a Black South African citizen or a permanent resident of South Africa
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have recently graduated with an LLB qualification from any South African university
  • Attained a minimum overall average of 65% for LLB studies
  • Be enrolled in the 1st or 2nd year of an LLM degree at a public university in South Africa
  • Undertake coursework and research in the field of human rights, constitutional law, and/or justice-related law
  • Preference may be given to students who graduated from specific universities and those with a strong academic record near graduation.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SAJHR BURSARY

Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria should submit clear copies of the following supporting documents:

  • South African ID document (certified copy) or passport with permanent residency (certified copy)
  • Full academic transcript/record (on institution’s letterhead)
  • Updated Curriculum Vitae
  • Contact details of two references
  • Motivational letter demonstrating financial need (e.g., student account statement)

There is no application form to complete. Submit the above documents via email to Dr Joey Kok, the SAJHR Managing Editor, at kok.joey@gmail.com. Include “SAJHR top-up bursary ” in the email subject line.

CLOSING DATE FOR THE SAJHR BURSARY

The closing date for applications is 1 November . Submit your application before this date to ensure it is considered.
