Tshwane University of Technology TUT Short Courses

At the forefront of South Africa’s dynamic educational landscape, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) shines with its array of short learning programs (SLPs). These programs stand out for their swift, accessible, and economical approach to specialized education. Whether part-time or full-time, TUT’s SLPs are continually updated to align with the latest industry trends and demands.

Emerging Management Development Program

TUT proudly collaborates with the National School of Government (NSG) to enhance the public sector’s proficiency through the Emerging and Advanced Development Management Programs. Accredited by the TUT Senate, these SLPs offer a seamless progression to the National Diploma and B Tech in Public Management.

This strategic alliance with the NSG not only broadens TUT’s contributions to state capacity building but also emphasizes its role as a key contributor to societal advancement. It paves the way for experienced government officials to further their education and integrate into TUT’s diverse academic community. This synergy also plays a significant part in curriculum innovation, ensuring that TUT’s educational offerings remain relevant to real-world scenarios.

Environmental Management Inspectors Program

In a significant move to empower Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs), TUT has partnered with multiple stakeholders, including the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Health Professions Council of South Africa, to deliver a specialized SLP for EHPs to qualify as Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs).

EMIs are crucial in overseeing compliance with environmental laws, a responsibility that directly supports the execution of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA). The Centre for Environmental Health at TUT is the hub for this transformative program.

Program Objectives

The SLP’s primary aim is to equip EHPs, particularly those in local government, with the expertise to:

  • Obtain appointment as EMIs by provincial authorities.
  • Conduct investigations and support the prosecution of environmental offenses with a solid grasp of the legal framework.

Admission Criteria

The program is tailored for candidates who meet these criteria:

  • Registered as an independent EHP with the HPCSA.
  • Employed by a municipality in an environmental health capacity.
  • Completed a peace officers training course.
  • Geographically, the focus is on applicants from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West provinces, limiting participation to four municipal delegates per session.

Program Delivery and Duration

The course spans a comprehensive 40-hour week. It is designed to be intensive, and participants should expect to engage fully each day from 08:00 to 17:00.

Enrollment Process

Prospective participants can obtain the application form and banking details from TUT’s Department of Environmental Health.

Course Materials and Assessment

Participants will receive electronic course materials before the program begins. They are expected to prepare a preliminary assignment, to be submitted at the program’s onset. The course culminates with a portfolio of evidence that encompasses all assessments, including a pre-course assignment and in-course evaluations.

Certification and Accreditation

Completing the program earns participants 40 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) accredited by the HPCSA.

Program Costs

TUT has conscientiously priced the program to ensure its accessibility to municipal employees, with plans to accommodate up to 40 learners per session. Depending on available resources, the course is intended to be offered biannually.

Through these SLPs, TUT reaffirms its commitment to providing educational programs that are not only responsive to societal needs but also pave the way for professional advancement and public service excellence.
