Important Note for New Applicants

If you’re considering enrolling in this program for the first time in 2017 or later, please be aware of important changes. As of 2020, this qualification will no longer be compatible with any Baccalaureus Technologiae programs. Instead, it’s being replaced by qualifications aligned with the newly-implemented Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework. Keep an eye on the University’s website for information on these new qualifications.

Admission Requirements and Selection Criteria

For Applicants Who Obtained a Senior Certificate Before 2008:

  • Admission Requirement: A Senior Certificate or equivalent with a D symbol at Standard Grade for English and either Biology, Physical Science, or Mathematics. Applicants with an E symbol at Standard Grade will also be considered.
  • Recommended Subjects: None
  • Selection Criteria: Assessment is based on the normal M-score with a weighted Swedish scale.

For Applicants Who Obtained a National Senior Certificate in or After 2008:

  • Admission Requirement: A National Senior Certificate with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, or an equivalent qualification, with an achievement level of at least 4 for English (home language or first additional language) and 3 for Mathematics or 4 for Mathematical Literacy.
  • Recommended Subjects: Agricultural Sciences, Geography, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences.
  • Selection Criteria: Applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 19 (with Mathematics) or 20 (with Mathematical Literacy).

Minimum Duration: Three years

Presentation: Day classes

Intake for the qualification: January only

Exclusion and readmission: Refer to Chapter 2 of Students’ Rules and Regulations.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Equivalence, and Status: Refer to Chapter 30 of Students’ Rules and Regulations.

Training Excursions, Field Trips, and Practicals:

  • Training excursions, field trips, and practical classes are compulsory and involve additional expenses beyond class fees. Basic camping equipment is also required, and further details will be provided at registration.
  • A minimum of three compulsory training field trips are scheduled in the training period. The evaluation of each training field trip is integral to the semester mark for the subject.
  • It is essential to pass each training field trip to pass the semester.
  • Costs typically include all traveling expenses, accommodation, entrance fees, and meals in some cases. Precautions should be taken against diseases like malaria and tick-bite fever.
  • Specifics about field trips will be communicated to students.

General Information:

  • Students may be required to wear a uniform during certain practical classes. Details about uniforms will be provided at registration.
  • The nature of the training carries some risk, and while precautions are taken to prevent accidents and injuries, it’s recommended that students consider insurance. More information is available during registration.

Financial Support, Loans, and Bursaries:

  • The University administers the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for financial support.
  • The Department administers some bursaries, including those for senior students, such as the Stud Breeders (Wildlife Ranching South Africa) and the South African Hunters’ Association Bursary.
  • Additional bursaries, such as the one from the South African National Parks Honorary Rangers, may also be available.
