UCT Admission Requirements for Health Science

UCT Admission Requirements for Health Science

The admission requirements for Health Sciences programs at the University of Cape Town (UCT) are comprehensive, involving multiple components including the Admission Points Score (APS), National Benchmark Tests (NBT), Faculty Points Score (FPS), and for the MBChB program, an additional Personal Report (PR). Here is a detailed breakdown:

General Requirements for Health Sciences Degrees:

APS (Admission Points Score):

Calculated from the NSC score (out of 600).

It includes percentages of three required subjects plus the next three best subjects, excluding Life Orientation.

NBT (National Benchmark Tests):

Score out of 300, results are categorized as Proficient, Intermediate, or Basic.

FPS (Faculty Points Score):

Score out of 900, comprising the NSC score plus the NBT score.

WPS (Weighted Points Score):

Used in Band B only, it is the FPS weighted by the applicant’s disadvantage factor.

Specific Program Requirements:

MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery):

Subject Requirements: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and English (Home or First Additional Language) at 60% or above; at least 50% for the next three best subjects excluding Life Orientation.

NBT: Intermediate range results.

APS: Minimum of 450.

PR (Personal Report): Score out of 100 (mandatory for MBChB applicants).

MedPS (Medicine Point Score): Score out of 1000, consisting of the FPS + PR.

BSc Physiotherapy:

Subject Requirements: At least 50% in all subjects, including Mathematics, Physical Sciences or Life Sciences, English (Home or First Additional Language), and the next three best subjects excluding Life Orientation.

APS: Minimum of 360.

NBT: Intermediate range results.

BSc Occupational Therapy, BSc Audiology, and BSc Speech-Language Pathology:

Subject Requirements: At least 50% in all subjects, including Physical Sciences or Life Sciences, Mathematics (or 60% for Mathematical Literacy), and English (Home or First Additional Language); plus 50% for the next three best subjects excluding Life Orientation.

APS: Minimum of 340.

NBT: Intermediate range results (applicants with Basic range or offering Mathematical Literacy are considered individually).

Additional Notes:

The MBChB program requires a Personal Report (PR) for a more comprehensive evaluation.

Applicants to Rehabilitation Sciences degrees do not submit a PR.

Applicants offering Mathematical Literacy for courses other than MBChB are considered on an individual basis.

The disadvantage factor in the WPS calculation accounts for background and educational disparities.

These requirements are specific to UCT and are subject to change; always verify with the university for the most current information.
