Course structure

The Master of Environmental Management contains both coursework and independent research over a minimum of two years. In order to graduate, students will have to complete all the requirements for each course.

Year 1

Semester 1

This semester course is on Resources and Processes (MOB 707), which introduces students to the bio-physical properties of the environment.

This 48-credit module is made up of:

  • A two-week contact session at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (January).
  • Three written assignments at monthly intervals submitted online.
  • One exam written at one of several urban centres throughout Southern Africa (May-June).

Semester 2

This semester course is on Corporate Environmental Management and Sustainability (MOB 708), which introduces students to the issues of environmental management such as environmental legislation, resource economics, conflict resolution, project management and environmental management, and assessment systems.

This 48-credit module is made up of:

  • A two-week contact session at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (July).
  • A one-week contact session at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (October).
  • Three written assignments at monthly intervals submitted online.
  • One exam written at one of several urban centres throughout Southern Africa (October).

Year 2

Semester 1

During the second year, students have to choose between two elective specialisation courses:

  1. Water, Pollution, and Rehabilitation (MOB 741).
  2. Biodiversity and Conservation Management (MOB 743).

Each course provides a more specialised overview of specific environmental sectors.

These 48-credit modules are made up of:

  • A one-week contact session at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (February).
  • Three written assignments at monthly intervals submitted online.
  • One exam written at one of several urban centres throughout Southern Africa (June).

Throughout the year
During the second year, students will have to complete a mini-dissertation on environmental management (MOB 791), which presents independent research within the environmental sector.

This 96-credit module is made up of:

  • A one-week research workshop at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (January).
  • A project proposal submitted online (February).
  • An oral progress report presented at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (August).
  • A mini-dissertation of all your research findings (November).
