Btech Tourism Management (will be phased out from 2018)

The aim of this qualification is to develop the students applied and cognitive competencies, interpretation, understanding as well as applications of tourism management principles. The student should be able to analyse and explain management decisions in the context of a tourism unit or company, or in the context of tourism development as well as to assess and interpret the external impact of decisions. The student should also be able to reflect on their managerial decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of tourism management and development. Students should have prior experience of the tourism industry in order to contextualize their learning to their business environment. 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time
BA Degree Tourism Development (will be replaced by B Tourism Development and Management in 2017)

The purpose of this qualification is to develop the ability of the student to question, analyse and interpret tourism development issues with global context. This purpose is achieved through the delivery of tuition and research-based projects where the student shows evidence of research and the ability to reflect on tourism development issues. Successful students will therefore be able to make the important link between historical and environmental heritage and tourism. Students will employ participatory fieldwork in communities to empower local and domestic stakeholders in the development of viable potential. 3 years full-time
BA Honours Tourism Development
- The primacy purpose of this qualification is to consolidate and deepen the learner’s expertise in Tourism Development by developing a coherent and critical understanding of the principles and theories of Tourism Development, provide qualifying learners with comprehensive and systematic theoretical knowledge and practical skills to apply the knowledge gained from historical studies geography and environmental studies, anthropology, tourism development and sport management to strategically identify new tourism attractions and develop tourism and heritage attractions in the tourism industry. The qualification will prepare learners for research based postgraduate study by developing their research capacity in the methodology and techniques of Tourism Development. 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

Hospitality Management

Hospitality Management has been designed for students wishing to enter the hospitality industry as a career choice. Hospitality encompasses the provision of accommodation management, food and beverage service, and the production of food to a paying guest. Front office management skills develop an understanding and insight into front of house rooms division and revenue management, as well as back of house or housekeeping divisions of any hospitality or hotel property. A food and beverage division provides restaurant and bar management, provision of service, restaurant design and flow, as well as financial controls relating to food and bar sales, ensuring profit margins and financial sustainability. Although not designed to create chefs (s differing career path), a hospitality manager is expected to have an understanding of food production, nutrition, purchasing and stores management, therefore the course include culinary theory and practical studies. Other areas of emphasis include hospitality marketing, hospitality law, financial management and talent management (HR). 3 years full-time
Diploma: Food and Beverage Operations

The successful food and beverage operations student will possess the appropriate knowledge, technical and personal skills and attitudes to work effectively, efficiently and sustainably at operational and supervisory levels within the food and beverage industry. Their basic managerial and high level operational competencies in the food and beverage operation will provide the foundation to process into managerial positions. The diploma will enable graduates to manage future operations competently including beverage services, practical knowledge of wines, cocktails and Barista training. 3 years full-time
BTech Hospitality Management (will be phased out in 2019)
- The aim of the qualification is to to develop the student’s applied and cognitive competencies in the acquisition, interpretation, understanding and applications of hospitality management principles. The student should be able to analyse and explain strategic and operational decisions in the context of the hospitality and/or tourism industry and to assess and interpret the external impact of decisions. The student should also be able to reflect on their managerial decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of hospitality management. Students must have experience in the hospitality industry in order to contextualize their learning to their working environments. 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

Postgraduate Degrees

The purpose of the Master’s in Tourism and Hospitality Management is to develop the ability of the student to question, analyse and interpret tourism and hospitality management issues within a global context with a focus on industry specific sectors. This purpose is achieved through the delivery of a research-based dissertation at the Masters level where the student will show evidence of scientific research and the ability to reflect in the context of tourism and hospitality management. The programme therefore assists in the continuing professional development of managers and leaders in tourism and hospitality management. Minimum 2 years, Maximum 3 years
PhD in Tourism and Hospitality Management
- The aim of the programme is to develop the applied competence of the Postgraduate on an advanced level in research, analysis, interpretation and understanding of tourism and hospitality. Through a Doctoral dissertation, the student will show evidence of independent research via quantitative or qualitative methods or a combination of both. This will so as to solve complex problems in society for the sustainability of the tourism and hospitality industries. The programme will assist in the continuing academic and professional development of postgraduate students.

- Short Learning Courses that are accredited and provide professional development, to upskill existing employees within the industry and to provide niche development programmes for the tourism and hospitality sector.
Requirements
- Applicants are invited to apply for CEP programmes depending on age, pervious educational levels and industry experience.
- Duration – Less than a year OR Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
