University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Application Guide for 2024-2025
Essential Documents for Application:
- Certified ID/passport copy.
- Certified copy of school leaving qualification, e.g., Matric Certificate.
- For international applicants, verification from Universities South Africa for eligibility. For clarity, refer to the undergraduate prospectus.
- If you’ve been to other universities, provide certified copies of degree certificates, academic records, and certificate of conduct.
- Non-English speaking international applicants need proof of English proficiency.
- If you studied at a foreign university, get evaluations from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- For Masters or PhD applicants, provide a research proposal or title of the dissertation/thesis.
- International applicants must have a valid SA study visa.
Online Application Process for UKZN:
- Ensure you have a functional email address.
- South Africans need an ID number; foreigners require a passport number.
- After getting your UKZN student number, settle the application fee.

Application Notes:
- Students switching programs should use their existing student number.
- New professional degrees cannot start in the second semester.
- Address changes for returning students will be done only during registration.
- When paying the application fee, use the reference: APPN followed by your student number. Payments take 24-48 hours to reflect.
- First-time South African undergraduate applicants must apply via CAO at www.cao.ac.za

Submission of Results and Documents: Attach certified copies of your Grade 11 and latest Grade 12 results. Neglecting this could delay your application.
Admission Criteria:
- Admission is based on the specific requirements of your chosen program.
- UKZN may not accept ACE School of Tomorrow graduates.
- Meeting basic requirements doesn’t guarantee admission.
Key Dates for 2024-2025 Applications:
- Medicine: Closes 30th June
- Other undergraduate programs: Closes 30th September
- Postgraduate programs have varying closing dates. Refer to the Postgraduate Brochure.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Relations: Extended to 30th November
Other Essential Information:
- Application methods differ among universities; some prefer online, others hard copies.
- Your Grade 11 marks play a crucial role. Some universities may consider Matric June results.

- Details of your current year’s activities, like school performance or gap year undertakings, are required.
- Always provide certified copies of documents. Ensure all entered details are accurate and double-check before submission.
- After paying the application fee, some universities may request proof.
- The declaration on the application form must be read and signed by both the applicant and a guardian.
- On acceptance, adhere to all further guidelines provided, including initial payments.
- An NBT test may be required by some institutions to assess academic readiness. The result is valid for three years.
