In 2004, the University of KwaZulu-Natal merged with Durban-Westville University to form the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The university has several key campuses, including Edgewood, Howard College, Pietermaritzburg, Medical School, and Westville Campus. UKZN Richard AD Turner Bursary 2025-2026
The University of KwaZulu-Natal is offering the Richard AD Turner Bursary Fund for application. This bursary is available to Master’s degree students at UKZN who demonstrate commitment to student leadership and community work contributing to democratic practices. Scholarships are awarded to support Master’s-level research focused on justice and freedom for all South Africans.
The bursary is named in memory of Richard “Rick” Turner, who was assassinated during the apartheid era. The award was established in honor of his opposition stance, involvement in the Trade Union movement, and his mother Winifred Jane Turner’s generous bequest to UKZN in her last Will.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply (failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification):
- Enrolled in a Master’s degree program at UKZN with research related to issues of freedom and justice for all South Africans.
- Demonstrate student leadership credentials.
- Engage in community work promoting democracy.
- Commitment to contributing to student leadership while holding the award.
- Expertise in trade unionism.
How To Apply?
Applicants should download the UKZN Richard AD Turner Bursary Application Form 2025-2026 and complete it.
Supporting documentation (all required documents must be submitted, as incomplete applications will be disqualified):
- Detailed CV (maximum 5 pages)
- Most recent degree certificate
- Transcript of academic record
- Reports from at least one referee commenting on your leadership/community involvement
- Proposal for your Master’s thesis or motivation for your dissertation (up to 3 pages)
- Motivational letter (1 page) explaining why you deserve the scholarship

The application deadline for the UKZN Richard AD Turner Bursary 2025-2026 is March 20. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
