UNISA Short Course in English for Speechwriting
The course aims to equip NQF level 7and honours students with the necessary English language competencies in academic and basic research writing. The Course focuses on critical reading and writing skills to help students gain the necessary confidence in using appropriate academic register in English
The target groups for this course are functionaries associated with corporate, government and diplomatic functionaries.
Senior Certificate or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification or equivalent experience
First year English undergraduate module

Both contact and online:
- online tuition
- Contact tuition – workshops: Three 2-day workshops.
(additional workshops may be offered at an additional cost at the clients’ request )
Learners are assessed as follows:
Formative assessment:
- Two assignments and short online activities
- Workshop activities
Summative assessment:
A Portfolio of evidence comprising: workshop activities, a critical evaluation form of presentations and online activities and a personal reflection on the learning process.
Topic 1: rhetorical strategies used in speechwriting in English
- Identifying and analysing rhetorical strategies used in different types of speeches in English
- Speechwriting and other types of writing in English
- spoken English and Text-to-Word variations
- Persuasive rhetoric versus everyday English
- rhetorical and literary techniques used in the English language
- main and supporting ideas and sentence variation in a speech text;
- effective speechwriting techniques
Topic 2: Composing a speech in English:
- from spoken to written text and vice-versa
- planning, drafting and writing your speech
- editing and proofreading your speech
Topic 3: Presenting and evaluating presentations:
- tailoring and presenting a speech for a specific audience and context
- evaluating presentation and providing constructive feedback;
